re cam run in
i have a emw h cam with a recomended spring preasure if 165lbs
i am a bit woried about runing the cam in with that much seat preasure .
i don't want to flaten out the cam .
i am wondering if its a good idea to reinstall the singles the heads came with
to run the cam in ,then put the duals back in or even tacking out the inner spring of the duals to run it in

Re: re cam run in
After you wipe a cam, the cam sellers will ask you how you did it, and tell you the other way was right
Give them a call first and ask if in any doubt, our opinions do not count for warranty purposes.
Run it in as-is with a good high ZDDP oil (preferably proper break-in oil) and the EP cam assy lube junk and the springs you are going to use unless the cam seller specifically tells you otherwise first.
Keep the RPMS over 2000 and vary the speed some if you like above that.
If its going to fail, its going to fail.
You don't want to be cranking on it for half an hour, jack in a known working ignition and fuel setup if possible.

Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

Re: re cam run in
a lot of guys will break a cam in with just the outer springs and then add the inners after break-in is done. I have done this also. Is it really needed? I don't know but it does give you piece of mind that first 20-30 minutes of its life.

Never happened to me so I guess I'm blessed, but the horror stories you hear definitely support that statement.Piledriver wrote:After you wipe a cam, the cam sellers will ask you how you did it, and tell you the other way was right
Breaking in with lighter springs is sensible, but normally isn't a necessity if you follow all of the good advice above.

Merry Christmas everyone
Damo this is the EMW phone number including all codes from Australia , 0011 1 310 644 8038 . also I think Penrite HPR 40 has the highest level of zinc that I've found (1500 ppm)
1 use Hpr 15 synthetic (1200ppm) and have 100k on my 71mm by 103mm no issues ,! just replaced the big ends doing a top end overhaul , the cam(wade Hydraulic GTR XU1 grind) looks good as does the crank journal just replaced the bearings because their cheap. I've multiple coolers and a thermostat and like to keep the oil temps below 95C .
What did you end up doing for a crankshaft?
cheers Derek

Re: re cam run in
Have you done the break-in yet ?
They were referring to running the outer single spring of your dual springs to break in the cam, then adding the inner spring after broke in.
You can not use the stock single springs to break in your cam, they will not handle the lift of the cam and will coil bind.
