I'm running the sharp 911 housing in a Splitty, I use the stock cooler as well as a few more . I'm doing a top end overhaul at the moment and will post some photos when it goes back together next week .
I'm not using a 911 fan , the stator/alternator mount was fabricated by a friend ,John Alder. The alternator(land cruiser 130amp) sits a bit further back into the housing , I've had to mod the housing and fit ducting vanes into the housing to get even cooling , not sure if this is because of the alternator disrupting the airflow or not .
As a point of interest Joe if you're still following this thread, John Alder from Volksengineering had what I believe was the first upright type 4 in a Baja in Brisbane my local area, around '87 ,I had one shortly after that . The man responsible was called Jerry(I never knew his last name) ,he used to import a lot of second hand parts from Europe .I bought my "kit" from him .
I would guess that Mike Sharp and Jerry would have talked as Toowoomba where Mike is based is not far from Brisbane and I'm sure Mike would've got parts from Jerry .
Jerry left OZ and went back to Czechoslovakia I think .
cheers Derek

Re: Cooling question...
Interesting, Mike and I were snail mailing back and forth for a few years. As I was doing research on my manual I was contacted by many people worldwide.
How I got the word, ha, now that I think about it was work. I worked in Manhattan for 30 years very close to Times Square, there were stores that specialized in foreign Magazines. In the States it was Hot VW and VW Trends, VW Greats, Also VW Australia, VW Motoring in UK etc. What I did was and I will use HOT VW as an example was go into the listing of VW Clubs worldwide and VW shows. Copy the pages and then on the copier blow up the addresses. After they were of size the could be read on if place on a envelope I would glue it on, and advertise my UPRIGHT manual. Stamps cost me hundreds of dollars but it worked. The head of the clubs made copies and gave them out. That is how I met Mike and found out I was not alone.
BTW Mike sent me articles on a team that won a 1000 mile race across the out back in a T-4 bug and he said Joe you do not need a rear hanger on a upright, they did not use it.

Re: Cooling question...
! modified some T1 tinware to fit around the pulley . The plastic fan is an unknown cutdown radiator fan ,cools better then a 964 12 blade fan that I also have but costs a bit in power . The alternator is off a 120 amp 1HZ Landcruiser .

Re: Cooling question...
i was wondering if a more even cooling effect can/will be had by using "diverters' in the tin like the type 1 tins have? especially on the 3/4 side?
