Re: 1911 Build
Sorry guys been really busy since the last post and haven't had much spare money to put into my car. It has sadly been sitting for a year now with no engine, but that's soon to change.
As of right now everything still sits as id did at the end of July so no updates on the throttle bodies as of yet. I have been going back and forth as to what cooling system I was going to go with. I was originally planning on going with a cali conversion but have finally decided on going with a corvair fan setup. I plan to use the cylinder head tins just like the cali setup but grafting in a corvair fan in the center of the engine. I recently ordered some corvair fan parts and they should be here tomorrow, so hopefully if I can get some free time I can get to work on this cooling system.
So with this cooling system my idea so far is (as I said before) to use the stock type 4 head tins and cut and weld together two sets like a cali conversion to make the upper tin pieces that go on the heads. The center section I'm going to have to hammer out of some sheet steel and until I get the fan mounted on the case I'm not sure how thats going to go together.
As for mounting the fan I have a few ideas but until i get the parts in hand I wont make a decision to how I'm going to do it. One thing I'm planning on that's going to be different from the stock Corvair setup (or any Corvair like fan setup I have seen for that matter) is I plan to use a modern serpentine belt to drive the fan. Also I'm considering a one way bearing in the pulley to eliminate the inertial load of the fan on the belt, same with the alternator. but all of these ideas could change once I dig into it.
Speaking of the alternator I haven't decided where I want to mount it yet. I could place it like Chevy did with the Corvair and use it as an idler pulley. The problem with that though is, well plainly I don't like how it looks its just too busy. My other idea is to mount it where the stock oil cooler would go, but I'm not sure I can get it to fit there. Just one more thing I cant figure out till I have parts in hand.
So that's about where I'm at right now, should be making some progress soon. I'll keep this update as much as I can.

Re: 1911 Build
Very small update. I got the corvair fan cut down and the reinforcement stud things ground off, so now I can get to work on the mount for it.

Re: 1911 Build
Spent some time this weekend working on the engine and doing allot of reading. The unfortunate result of all of the reading is that for now I'm going to have to put the serpentine belt idea on the back-burner.
After 10 hours of searching online I couldn't find a pulley that would work for the fan without loads of machine work being done to it. So for now I'm going to stick with a v-belt and will revisit the serpentine belt after I get this thing back on the road. On a positive note I started working on the cooling tin, fabricating some of the custom pieces needed to make all of this work. All of this tin work is going to take allot longer than I originally thought but it'll get done.
On a side note I believe I found a nice way to mount the fan on top of the engine using off the shelf parts. I'm going to place an order for the parts later today and ill report back with my idea and some pictures once they arrive.

Re: 1911 Build
Got the fan mount finished today it very simple and uses an off the shelf shaft mount to secure the Corvair bearing.
I got the mount from McMaster-Carr PN 1870K5.
Here are all of the pieces. The bearing, the cut down fan, the pulley, the mounting flange, a spacer, and the mount plate to attach it all to the case.
Bearing mounted to the case.
Whole assembly put together
Now to get the engine tin together.
EDIT: Trying to get all of my pictures back after loosing photo bucket. Don't think I still have these, will upload if I find them.

Re: 1911 Build
Looks great, I just used a hunk of the corvair case top and added some steel tabs.
(it's removable from the corvair case, like a sump pan...)
You might want to consider boxing in the legs (or the whole thing) a bit, there's a lot of shaking and large loads goin on.

Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

Re: 1911 Build
Thanks pile.
I was already thinking about doing that but after I got the whole thing bolted together to test its fit, I grabbed the pulley and tried to shake it. All I managed to do was shake the whole engine on the stand. The whole plate is made from 11GA so its about 0.125" thick. But I like overkill so I'll probably go back and weld on some reinforcement plates to the legs anyway.
I started roughing out the tin work yesterday as well, hopefully I can get some more work done this afternoon assuming the wife doesn't want to go run errands all day.

This is getting more interesting all the time!
BTW,what diameter did you cut the Corvair fan down to?

Re: 1911 Build
It comes from the factory at 11 3/16" I cut mine down to 9 1/4". Could have gone slightly bigger but I wanted to make sure I had room for the tin work to fit around the fan.
EDIT: I just realized I cut the fan down to 9 1/4" not 9 3/4". I changed it in the post above

Are there already bolt holes in the engine case for your mount?
Pile, do you have any pics of your Corvair cooling?

Re: 1911 Build
The 4 bolt holes I used are the 4 bolt holes that the factory uses to mount the head tins on the type 4.
Opened them up for 6mm bolts. Right now im using grade 12.9 6mm internal hex bolts to hold it down (I had them laying around). I thought about drilling them out to 8mm but it seems strong enough as it is.
Pile,
If you have any pictures feel free to post them up. Also have you found anywhere if there is a specific ratio between fan diameter and intake opening in the fan shroud? My gut tells me there has to be but I have yet to find any info online about it.

Re: 1911 Build
They were posted here at one point, I never got past the mockup stage as a semi tried to drive over the 914 the fan setup was intended for, but it looks like it will heal this summer/fall.Electroman wrote:the 4 bolt holes I used are the 4 bolt holes that the factory uses to mount the head tins on the type 4. they are 6mm bolts. right now im using grad 12.9 6mm internal hex bolts to hold it down (I had them laying around). I still have the setup, I should really reweld everything now that I can make it purty.
