I've always set mine by adjusting till zero clearance then going another half to 1 turn.

The LESS you preload them, the more internal "stroke" they have, and the more likely they will be able to pump themselves up properly, and any air out.

Some set them for std .006" running clearance for initial run in, but that's hard on the spring clip that keeps the innards in place.

The key thing is try to be very consistent, as using them you lose ~any audible warning of impending doom from the valvetrain.

If you can keep track of needed adjustments, you can get some indication of seats pounding in etc.
Mind, I found that most of the wear was the adjuster screw tips, many seem made from bubble gum.

1/4 turn preload.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.
