I'm thinking of buying this exhaust for my stock type 4 engine.. Does anyone know what kind of headers go on this?

I'm looking at Headers and it says CU or CJ engine. Does anyone know what these letters are referring to?

These letters are the engine-code. CU and CJ are 2Liter engines from the vanagon.

their heater boxes have the same flange to the muffler as the 72-74 bus/411 and 412's did.

So, why do this company sell a CJ and a CU model of the same headers?

My guess is the CJ are the oval flanges and the CU are the square flanges. On the stock exhaust the late buses had a y-pipe as the heater box, maybe the CJ's used a different exhaust style then the US spec'd buses. I know the vanagons had square port heads but used a seperate pipe style like the earlier type 4's. I also noticed in the pics from that link, that they used the same photo for the fancy equal length one.

They use the same pictures for both, showing flanges for oval port heads. Sounds like a call to the supplier or manufacturer is in order.

In Europe we had the 72-74 style heat exchanger and exhaust right till the end of the type 4 in 82. the only difference between <78 and >78 is the square ports on the head and therefore the heat exchanger.

worth noting that the CJ engine for the bay in 79 came with square port heads

hope that helps

I'm bumping this thread - I also wonder
what type of headers fit on GB (100 hp) engine.
Will CJ or CU fit ?

I used one of their bus super flow muffler's for my 79 bay running mild 2ltr. My application was bolted upto the heat exchangers, no problem with fit and is a higher than expected quality. No loss of power and much quieter than other so called performance exhausts. What exhaust system are you now running?Do you use heat exchangers or do you already have a header system in place and just want to replace the muffler.

I'm going to use this 914 GB 2.0L (100hp) engine in my Replica Speedster 356, but I'm wondering
what kind of headers to use. Vintage Speed says they have headers for CJ only.
But is CJ the same as the heads on the GB ? (will they fit ?)
There is something about rectangular and oval exhaust ports I think ?

Good to hear that the super flow is not too loud, I have not decided to go for their "sport" or "super" version...
