Does anyone have any picturs of a dry sump set up for a beetle. I'm converting my motor to Drysump and would like to get ideas for tank location and construction.

Thanks!

Aircooled.net has an excellent kit available.

I am going to fab. my own tank that fits next to the trans or above it. I can't modify my beetle body because it is perfect condition. Mounting it below instead of inside is my only option. I do have a few pics of conventional interior tank installs.

Can you e-mail the pictures please?

Thanks,

Someone do me a favor and explain this dry-sump thing to me. I'm not saying it's bad or good, just tell me what the attraction is. It seems like a lot of bulk and weight to me.

There are a few advantages, but I will let someone else explain: http://www.howstuffworks.com/question331.htm

There are a few additional links on this page that are worth looking at.

Steve,
I've looked into this myself. Just a thought.... Could you modify an autostick transmission fluid reservoir for your application? I looked into this for my ghia, but ended up scrapping this idea. I don't know about space in a beetle's engine compartment(clearance with dual carbs, etc). Just a thought.......

I like the idea of mounting it on the other side of the battery. I will probably mount it there when I go that route.

Ralleybug,

Thanks for posting pictures. I really want to see more pictures if anyone has them to get some ideas for my tank. I am going the custom fab direction. I've seen the CB Tank, Peterson, and 911 tank. I'm really interested in custom applications.

Thanks for all the info so far.

Just like Chris mentioned, I think that an autostick ATF tank would fit the application perfectly since it is made to fit under the right-rear fender. The only thing is that a hole would have to be cut on the right side of the engine compartment for the filler neck and cap. I forgot what's the tank capacity but I think it work.

The auto stick sump is pretty small for the job, and DS tanks generally have extensive baffling and layers of horizontal baffles at the top, the oil sheets out on to aid getting the bubbles out.

You want at LEAST 2 gallons to give the oil plenty of time to de-aerate,3 gallon (12 quart) is a very common size, you typically run 8-10 quarts in a "12 qt" tank.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

Brimming the tank would be messy!

That's pile, I'm thinking under the wing will be best for tank shape vs location in relation to oil level....
