Could someone post a picture of a Vanagon shroud next to the stock T4 shroud for comparison?

I'll have to go out and look at my vanagon shouds but i'm pretty sure the alternator area is just about identical.

Samba classified ad link for type 4 shroud, there is enough pictures to show differences between std vs vanagon shroud.

The Vanagon top alt mount sits up high and sticks out the side several inches... Completely different setup.

The tin has some issues in that area but it doesn't take much to make it work as long as you are OK with an open engine compartment.

A T3 may not have room for a Vanagon housing and Vanagon alternator/mount in the std Vanagon location.

BUT--- There's plenty of room in the "normal" T4 location, but it needs new mounts fabbed.
(I was forced to choose where to put it as I needed to fab new mounts regardless)
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

Is the stock T4 cooling fan used or would I have to find the vanagon cooling fan as well as the shroud?

I am assuming that the T4 oil cooler fits in the vanagon shroud as well?

The engine side tin/fan etc fits fine. (AFAIK fan is same part)
The only significant alteration that's needed is to clear whatever upper alternator mount you fab.
The Vanagon upper mount bolts on the side of the fan housing, and the non-vanagon tin needs trimmed to clear.

Actually, I like the way your engine looks as is. I think that I'd forego using the upper alternator mount and fab up a bracket to install it like a T4 as you have done.

Thanks!

I'll try and take a better pic of the simple mount I made.
I actually want to add a small tab to it to an adjacent 8mm bolt to triangulate/make it 100% stiff.

A T3 may not have room for a Vanagon housing and Vanagon alternator/mount in the std Vanagon location.
It a tight fit but there just enough room for alternator (w/o blower housing attached), see picture below of Vanagon shroud and alternator in 1965 Notchback.

Any Type 4 Vanagon shroud, engine tins and alternator should work. Not sure what years its either 1980-81 or 1980-82.

Vanagons had higher output alternators w/internal reg, would be a decent setup as it fits.
(I wasn't sure, I had a vanagon alt and housing, but no bracket, the GM setup was less work)

ya the vanagon alternator is a 65a deal and has a cooling fan behind the pulley just like the 70a bus upgrades. The fan and pulley are interchangable between the 65a and 70a alternators.

The Vanagon alts pulley and shims fit well on my 100A GM alt as well.
(needed stacked different, but it worked well)

Is it absolutley neccesary to use a higher output alternator?
