Type 4 Exhaust Stub J pipes
I need some Type 4 Stub J pipes... I'm building an exhaust system and having trouble locating them! Are there any exhaust vendors out there that can supply ready made or do they have to be custom made?

You need to find a set of 411/412 heat exchangers and then cut off the covers.

Yeah some may call it overkill, but you can't have too much overkill.

Re: Type 4 Exhaust Stub J pipes
If you want to make a set of T4 stubs, IIRC I (think I...) posted a how-to awhile back.
Short version:
1.5" tube, ~3.5" long, cut along length halfway down center w/bandsaw. SS is good to keep heat out of the heads, mild steel exhaust pipe less prone to crack.
Put cut across a vise and squeeze end (last 1/2") until you get the perfect oval fit to head.
Weld now mostly closed up cuts, tack/weld some tubing or ears on, weld on flanges, finish on belt sander, done.
Obviously jigs would be nice, but you have a set of tapered 1.5" stubs in ~30 minutes.
You can step the size up at the flanges.

Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

OK - I understand the construction of the stubbies - one more question, the sealing edge: should it be rounded, rolled, flattened or just left as is? I believe it is supposed to get a copper ring in there to seal?
Sorry for all the questions - I also need to make some stub pipes this monday.

Flatten the mating surface with a large bastard file so that the two pipes are perfectly aligned with one another. Then go back and lightly file the outer edge so that it is no longer sharp.

if not wanting to make them A.J. Sims makes the flanges. Just construct your header off of them...

Spendy, but a lot less so than the other stubs commercially available.
Those look nice, another lister was trying to make some awhile back but couldn't get the fact that there was a left and right stub... T4 ex stud offset differs.
If you are in a position where you need early HX but have late squareports, these are a possibility.

Actually The Stub Pipes from George Narbel @ European Racing Headers sells his stub pipes separately and those are complete ready to bolt on for around $150 ? It has been a while since I bought a set, and where cheaper then, I guessamated his increase...

Ah, good, I keep thinking of the ones from ...someone else, awesome quality assured, but the price is still stuck in my mind like a splinter...Type 4 Unleashed wrote:Piledriver wrote:Spendy, but a lot less so than the other stubs commercially available.
