Hall Sensor/flywheel mod for FI

Post by wellsy »

Has anyone done this on a type4. I don't have a type4 case handy to look but this looks a very neat solution and a lot less hassle of adding a trigger wheel behind the front pulley.

Interesting.........instead of adding material you take it away. I can see this as a + for offroad engines as the sensor is out of the air and not as likely to collect grit.

Where did this come from? :D
So you think your project is taking forever eh? Well you've got nothing on me.....

A guy in Norway, Jørn Tangen, has the same set-up, but in a wasserboxer-based engine. It's on the "Racebuss" if any of you were at SCC this year.

Here's a video of the bus:

I have a lot of experience with Hall Effect Sensors , we use the on our elevators to tell us where the elevator (or Lift for you guys in Europe), is located in the shaft.
Sure that will work and obviously it does, but man this is a lot of precision machine work. Some of our installations use a sensor and a magnet. The magnet is shielded by a steel tape with holes . When the hole lines up with the magnet and sensor there is a pulse.
Or in some cases no magnet is used and it is the tip of a gear that comes into the sensors range to give a pulse.
I guess in this case on the flywheel the high areas on the flywheel will pulse the sensor. Man square holes, that calls for some wild machining. Square works better because of the exact cut off . I know round holes work and it would not be that big of a deal to drill holes in a flywheel . Drill the hole for the sensor in the case. Stick a marking pen in the hole as the flywheel spins and you have the line on the flywheel . Then all you have to do is divide the holes exactly apart . Hole size is very important. After many experiments 3/8” worked best for us. But each sensor is different and has different ranges from 2mm to 20mm. If it is used on elevators you know it has been tested like crazy. They are maintenance free.

I have done the same thing on my 2.5L type 4. It's a very nice and clean solution

Amazing...........so simple, elegant, and just plain clever! :D

wellsy, I hope you don't mind, I added to this thread title to hopefully get more interest, and I am certain your question was answered.

Thanks to our friends for sharing their pictures of this mod on their type 4's!

Now if we could just talk John over at aircooled.net into selling the parts to do this as a kit and offer a flywheel exchange.

How did you guys make the holes, with an end mill? Once in a while we get a new idea. Nice.

Yes it's done with a mill.
...actually I had "GetBackOnTrack" from this forum to do the machine work on my flywheel.

Hey, Streeter, can you believe all this was being done in a top secret location and now released to the public, ha!!!

Did mine in the top secret location of Denmark.
A lot of "secret" type 4 stuff is happening in Scandinavia! 8)

Nicely discussed. Thanks for the title change Streeter.

The guy who did the machining makes some awesome stuff but we did discuss that the holes would not need to be square, he made them that way because he could
After talking about it apparently quite a few people have been doing it over here but strangely none of the 'engine builders'

I've had trouble with my existing engine which has a berg pulley machined due to the distance of the sensor but I've also used one for traction control just using the castings of the inner 944 front disk. But I think that might be less temperamental to the signal.

Warp : very nice pictures thanks, machining longer channels effectively makes the reading area parallel. Did you do your balancing after the machining?

Yes balancing was done afterwards.

Aye Joe, looks just like Yankee engineuity :P but in a Danish flavor :D.

Thanks to our friends across the pond for sharing this, I am sure this will catch on quickly with custom engine builders who prefer the "clean look" this setup will afford. With a dressed engine the ignition trigger will be hidden nicely and no pulley modifications!

A nice thing about the holes is, you can set up the flywheel and use the holes or not use them. It is not like you have something you bolted on to the engine and now have to remove. All you did was make your flywheel lighter.

The sensor is adjustable, in and out for the correct, on / off reading, what could be simpler??

OK so what was this for, Oh I remember your wipers!!!! Every pulse and your wipers clean your windshield. Or was it blow your horn, ha!!
