Pile, you have made some good points, and I agree with all of them.
The bubblegum adjusters are to be checked, and the swivel feet are preferred, but the donor rockers are getting scarce over here. I fitted late (Vanogon a/c) rocker assys and if any wear does show up with the adjuster screws I may go back to the og's, they were still serviceable by memory.
I use Brad Penn (regular supply can be $$$) or ACE 30 or 40 which is Australian made for air cooled engines. For initial break-in I've been using a diesel straight weight with no problems, although now I may use the ACE (which is a simple less added to 20W-40 or 25W-50 for older engines) for convenience.
Filters I have always used OEM, Mann or Knecht, as I've heard they do have a superior filtration over many, and in years of using these I've never had dramas, where I've seen issues with other brands, namely common here Ryco.
Cheers again

Be careful of the "less added to" bit, the problem with most modern oils in the US is that they added less zinc and phosphorous so cat converters on 2007+ models would last >150K miles.
The same disease has spread overseas, I'm sure.
Of course, if you have a pre-2007 model anything ... too bad, buy new, NMP.
I'd stick with the diesel single grade or multi-grade, they have to test those properly.
I guess everyone forgot to set their locations... It got lost in the board upgrade.

Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

This thread is almost two years old. Any new cams/lifter sets to add?

Cams, I don't believe to be an issue, but lifters are another story, and there seems to be more options for the Tool Steels now.
JayCee TS-2 Tool Steel Lifters $599
56 gram Tool steel Lifters $550
NEW Udo Becker 95g tool steel lifters $425 shipped and there are also 56g sets for over $700
Also from Germany Thorsten Pieper has 56g Tool Steel lifters,
Contact Link he is a Board Member Here- Price with exchange rate as of 10/26/09 250.00 EUR = $371.702 USD
I am running a set of the Udo Becker TS 95g lifters, no breakin on a new cam, and I started the motor and just let it idle.

Any word on the old 39 gram first gen lifters with modern cams? That is my plan, but concerned about compatibility.

Your talking about the 356 style lifters, and they have been around for some time and no know compatability issue's or at least none I have heard of and have asked lots and on both sides of the pond, I have a set in my marthon build and it may be finished this year ? And it will go thru the regular breakin procedure.Steve Arndt wrote:Any word on the old 39 gram first gen lifters with modern cams? That is my plan, but concerned about compatibility.

IIRC shaq55 stocks Thorstens lifters here in the US.
Not sure if he carries the bushings needed for T4/WBX?

Its good to hear Oliver is still around, i will get a hold of them tomorrow and send him the pictures. They replaced the first set i had a few years ago when the cups fell out with a "newer design" that was supposed to be pressed in differently. I have a couple other things I want to check before I put all the blame on the lifters but I know Jake had the same loose cup issue with the set he tried the first round.

I sent you a PM w/ his contact.
John Connolly told me he sold lots of sets without any problems. My case with the bushings has a ton of machine work and custom tricks done to it, so I am going to run it. I've been told that removing the pressed in 39 gram lifter bushings will be very difficult.

Re: The Ultimate Type 4 Cam\lifter\related Discussion Thread
I had heard about the cups coming out, but that was a while ago, here is a pic of my 42g set and the newer style bushing I installed, both of I believe came from Engine Plus.
And should I choose to get away from these lifters, an option instead of removing the bushings, is to have the bushings machined to except Type 1 lifters.

Re: The Ultimate Type 4 Cam\lifter\related Discussion Thread
They are made of Aluminum, where previously they were made Bronze.
These were made longer to better support the push rod end, then beveled back for clearance so oil could drain back from the push rod tubes.
These Bushings were maybe a fix for the lifter cup issue ?
