What a horrible way to mount the stub pipes! Looks like some Autocross assembler has been at work here... sorry for the harsh words, but that is not 'the proper way' imho..

It's hard to say why Adz's motors previous owner would do this, maybe the exh stud threads were pulled, and this was their idea of a fix, I think Adz bought the car from someone in So Africa ?

In this Pic, the idea was to reduce the angle coming out of the exh port, and there is no room for the exh stud, so this was bolted the same.

Yes, its a very homemade design from whoever

Interestingly, all the exhaust stud threads are intact so who knows why they chose to have the stubs like this..

I did want to change the exhaust system for a 'proper' S/S one but funds won't allow it. Maybe thats something for next season.

Hey Hey, don't be so quick to bag on that one...
Very innovative!

Not only do you get a better exit angle on the stub, but you also make more room for porting on the long side radius.

You can't go wider because of the pushrod tubes, so with that other stud boss gone... there's some more room.

If it doesn't leak, and if lasts...
(should capitalize those "ifs"),

Somebody might be on to something here...

Ok guys, the heads are back on and leak down tests now showing between 20% and 15% leakage with the engine stone cold and with new rings too. I'll maybe try the leakdown again mid season, just for curiosity!

Last night we also glued the pushrod tubes in and bolted rockers on. The IDA's need building back up then i should be able to fit the motor back in the car :D

My first race meet is three weekends away  , i need to get a move on!
The first race is on Easter Sunday, its the annual minis v beetles grudge match at York Raceway. Do a search on Youtube for footage of previous years, its cool!
Then if i haven't broke it on the Sunday, its then the first round of my proper race series (Air Cooled Eliminators) on Monday. Two days of racing, i can't wait 8)

With everything fixed, your gona find it's gonna be a toitally different beast compared to what it was before.

And I think you should go down on the mains, with a 10.1 static CR, 215 mains are too much, you will wash out the rings, and probally never seat them.

I would say for starters, 170 mains 200 airs & 60 to 65 idles, it may still be a little rich but it's hard to say for sure whith out knowing anything about the cam.

She's up and running!

Couple of oil leaks to sort and it's not charging for some reason.

BUT.........WOW it sounds completely different and much much more responsive AND faster!
We only gave it a blast down a local industrial area but what a blast! :D

I'll update you on quarter mile figures when i race in a couple of weeks time. I won't have time to dyno it before then but i'll do it when i can.

Cheers for all your comments/info guys :)

Hello,

Yup, the bug ran great :D

I won the first round of our race series : Air Cooled Eliminators :D

Didn't beat my personal best time of 12.62 but managed a 12.64 and had the wheels up a few times too

I was trying out different jets in the IDA's and couldn't get any improvement over what i had in them originally. 225 mains and 155 airs but they look to have been enlarged but i don't know what to.
So its open for improvement for sure!

I'll be racing again in a couple of weekends, so hopefully i'll be a bit quicker next time :)

English Lad, it was Dyno'd at a place in Boldon (V Power, i think?)

Cheers Guys

They are in Europe--- (OK, almost) Probably used to it by now.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.
