broken gearbox on my first pass finished the season off today.
That's all for this year now....I wonder if Santa will bring me a built 091 for Christmas??

Hey Frallan,
I found the original hand written note which came with the old car and it states the con rods as being Carillo!

Hi Steve,
That's another mystery
The 'box is an 091 6 rib and I got it from a guy who had it built to suit a Subaru turbo engine. He had it as a project for so long that he couldn't remember any of the ratio details other than it had a modified 4th gear and had T25 Syncro spider gears that were welded (locked diff).
The engine was pulling around 6k crossing the line @ about 100-108mph.
Cheers

While you've got it pulled all apart, it's time to trade off that type 4 and go to a type 1 turbo'd LOL
I fought my type 4 in my Fiat (ran 12's and always felt like it was laying down at the top end -- -- finally traded it for a paint and body job and a 2165 engine -- put a t3/t4 turbo with a AJ Sims 500 2 barrel Holley on the 2165 and dyno'd 300+ at 20 pounds boost on Avgas 100LL
Went from this:

Well it is not impossible even if they are A beam.
Carillo has or maybe still makes A beams too.

Hmmm, I do have a 2165 t1 race spec long block kept over from converting my wife's race bug back to a road car
It ran 14.1 with IDA's on the strip in a near full weight car with stock box and treads, so would go well in my lighter car!
I'll stick with my trusty TIV for now though but the seed has been planted for turbos and 10's

Re: 2700cc only 161bhp on the dyno? *UPDATE*
Well I am posting this as I have been racing Adz beetle for the first couple of meetings this season and we have pulled the engine apart as the performance was dropping off.
I will post some pictures of the rods shortly,
We have also got a spec for the cam now which I will also post.
The heads are in quite a bad way with two on the inlet seats sinking into the head. We are not sure if we can repair these with the heads already being 50x40 so we maybe looking at starting again with the heads unfortunately. Has anyone had experience with seats sinking? Did you repair it or scrap the heads off?
Hope to get some pictures up soon.
David.

I'm not sure if you've seen the work Jakob at "Get Back on Track" does , he is based in Denmark and has a lot of photos of his work on FB , he does completely weld up combustion chambers and re machine . I'd ask him for his thoughts .
cheers Derek

Where are you at? Maybe we can suggest some shops that may be able to save the heads. Anything is possible...

If you want to make power, only use a pro head shop. Avoid general machinists and parts sellers.

Re: 2700cc only 161bhp on the dyno? *UPDATE*
Well we have found a ship the does performance heads and prep work.
He has taken a look at the heads and is confident he can replace the seats.
So the plan is as follows,
Remove old seats and while we are on we are going to weld the intake ports up to allow some additional porting.
New sintered valve seats, 3 angle valve job and new guides.
The old cam is a hulydaulic grind weber, it only lifts .425"
We are going to replace this with a Webcam 86c
Possibly up the 48 IDA to 51.5's and see if that helps.
Compression is 10/1
What sort of power levels should we be looking at with the new set up?

Yes, will be like a new engine with a real cam...
Consider an 86B or 163/86B, too much cam (or too much cam for the static CR) is the pits on the street.
With a 2.7 you have some more wiggle room, but overkill on cam sucks.
Note: Don't flycut the heads more than absolutely needed to clean up, the decks really too thin even stock.

Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.
